Problems for the 2010 US Invitational YPT

USAYPT Members have access to "Guides" that the International Coaches
produce for each of these problems. The Guides are introductions to the
problems in both theory and experiment for beginning teachers.

The Guides cannot be shared with students (see the
Requirements and Guidelines for Professional Conduct).
Members must complete the security acknowledgement
statement in order to obtain a password to the guide web
pages. Contact the Secretary, USAYPT to start this process.

TipCat

1. TipCat: Place a small wooden stick over the edge of a desk. Hit the end of the stick overhanging the table so that the stick flies away. How is the flight distance related to the relevant parameters? What conditions maximize the horizontal flight distance?

BlowPipe

2. Blowpipe:  Investigate the motion of a projectile inside a blowpipe. Determine the conditions for maximum exit velocity when blown by the mouth.

VoltCell

3. Voltaic Cell: Make a voltaic cell using paper tissues as a salt bridge. Study and explain how the electromotive force of the cell depends on time.

Geyser

4. Geyser: Support a long, vertical tube in a vessel containing water. Heat the vessel directly from the bottom and you will observe that the water erupts. Arrange for the water to drain back into the vessel to allow repeated eruptions. Investigate the parameters that determine the eruption frequency.
